Bunnahabhain


Bunnahabhain single malt has been produced since 1881 at the Bunnahabhain Distillery, found on the isolated north-eastern tip of Islay. It is pronounced ‘Bu-na-ha-venn’, which means ‘mouth of the river’ in Scots Gaelic language. This refers to the Margadale River near the distillery.
What makes Bunnahabhain quite distinct from the other single malts of the island is its surprisingly gentle taste. The reason for this is that it is created using lightly peated malted barley and the island’s pure spring water that flows freely underground, away from the peaty moorlands. It is a taste that serious whisky connoisseurs will recognise as a very superior Scotch whisky, a taste that is renowned as “The gentle taste of Islay”. The Bunnhabhain range has been re-launched as “un-chillfiltered”.The result is a richer, fuller whisky with more depth of character and complexity. Bunnahabhain’s three fine drams:
12 year old – in a gift box:
Colour: Golden
Nose: Fresh and aromatic with a subtle smoke.
Palate: Light fruit and nuts leading to a malty sweetness.
Finish: Beautifully rich and full-bodied, gently lingering on the tongue for a few moments.
Ex-sherry cask influence.
Un-chillfiltered, 46.3% alc/vol.
18 year old - in a gift box:
Colour: Rich Golden
Nose: Honeyed nuts and a slightly sea-induced salty tang, followed by rich toffee and leathery oak aromas.
Palate: Beautifully balanced, the palate is influenced by mellow sherried nuts and shavings of the finest natural oak.
Finish: Dry notes interspersed with mixed spices leading into a light salt and sherry finale.
Influence of a higher percentage of ex-sherry casks is evident.
Un-chillfiltered, 46.3% alc/vol .
25 year old – in an Alder wooden box with sold brass fittings:
Colour: Amber Golden
Nose: Sweet caramel dessert aromas with subtle nuances of oak and polished leather. 
Palate: Sweet berries and cream ensures a wonderful mélange of tastes that  progress into a roasted nut and malt feast, with a hint of spices. 
Finish: Soft, yet dry, with the sense of lingering sugar and spiced-oak flavours.
The close proximity of casks to the shore results in a more noticeable sea influence. 
Lower percentage of ex-sherry casks.
